About RoadSense and the Road Safety Initiative

This site is best read in descending order on the menu. You have read "The Facts".

If you don't have much time read the Press Release which is also in the form of a letter you can send to others.

The Latest provides the smoking gun and comprises news reports showing just how badly speed cameras have failed.

10 Point Plan provides a common sense ten point plan to reduce the road toll.

About this site.

This site is a personal road safety initiative supported by members of the RoadSenseOZ forum from all around Australia and overseas.

My name is Harry Brelsford, I started the RoadSense road safety initiative in late 2002. Through the RoadSenseOZ forum and "Under the Radar" book, the initiative is growing a large base of supporters and contributors who have also concluded that the current "speed kills" policy is a tragic failure.

Our objective is safer roads using commonsense policies. We do not advocate the abolishment of speed limits nor do we have any argument with the Police who have a tough job and we know most joined the force to make the world a better place, not operate a speed camera.

I started the initiative after being found guilty of a speed camera offence when I knew I was not speeding. I have not had an accident in over 35 years, have never shot a red light and my worst offences are a few minor open road speeding tickets. I now have an urban 80 km/h zone speeding conviction allegedly detected at 91 km/h with the camera pointing at high voltage power lines and deflecting off a massive steel pylon. (I saw the Police camera vehicle as I was alongside it, checked my speedo and was relieved to see I was on 80 km/h. The camera took a picture of the back of my car when I was 30 metres past the police vehicle - and the image of my car way past the centre of the photo but oncoming cars are in the centre of the image.)

I defended myself and even though there was a massive steel pylon in the radar beam and the Police Officer admitted in Court to altering the deployment log months after the event, I was still found guilty. I was surprised at the measures taken to ensure I was found guilty. I believe this is called a zero tolerance policy. I can still only speculate at the objectives of this policy. Being denied justice for such a minor offence is the overriding reason for the RoadSense initiative. I had to do something.

My initial motivation was obviously to find a way to achieve justice for myself and possibly hundreds of thousands of other responsible motorists wrongfully accused of a minor offence which can greatly effect their livelihood through loss of drivers licence.

Soon after starting the site I was to realise from the facts being presented by supporters that there is overwhelming evidence that not even 2% of fatality crashes are caused by vehicles traveling above the speed limit while reports used to justify speed cameras claim around 40% are caused by "speeding".

Compelling evidence points to the fact that the speed kills policies currently in force around Australia are causing more road deaths than they prevent and getting this fact to the ears of the public and the politicians is what this site is about.

RoadSense is taking a stand. We hope you will too. Join our forum or at least tell others about the facts presented here - tell them speed cameras are not fair dinkum. You can also download and print out a RoadSense bumper sticker.
